The Cowboy Sheriff - Trish Milburn (HAR #1403 - May 2012)

Series: Teagues of Texas (Book 3)

He wants to serve and protect…

Still, Keri Mehler wants nothing to do with Sheriff Simon Teague. Keri has lost almost her entire family, her brother Carter is who-knows-where, and now she is sole guardian of her late sister's ten-month-old girl. She doesn't need her old crush coming around and stirring things up even more!

Everyone in Blue Falls, Texas, might find the cowboy sheriff charming, but Keri knows the truth. Simon was the reason her brother ran off for a life of trouble, and he's the last person she would turn to for comfort. But the lawman seems determined to help her and her little niece. Keri is equally determined to keep Simon at arm's length. She wants to hate him, but his charm may finally be getting to her, too.

Very good book.  Keri and Simon had had a falling out over Keri's brother years earlier, and now they don't speak.  When Simon had to break the news of her sister's death to Keri, he couldn't stand to see her so alone.  I really enjoyed seeing the town charmer as he tried to help Keri with little Hannah.  He wouldn't let her shut him out as he kept stepping in to help with the bakery and with Hannah.  At first he didn't understand why he kept trying, but he slowly realized that Keri had started to become the best part of his life.  Keri couldn't understand why Simon kept coming back, no matter what she said or did to keep him away.  When she finally found out the truth of what happened with her brother, the final walls started to come down.  She wasn't sure if she wanted to risk loving him and take the chance of losing him too, but she couldn't seem to stop it from happening.  I really enjoyed seeing Simon as he cared for Hannah.  I also liked the way he dealt with Carter at the end.
